OK! Let's get started. First of all make a new document. Transparent background. size 250x250

Now, Using the Custom Shape Tool create the chat sign. Make it a little bigger because we will scale it after that.

Now go to Edit->Transform Path->Skew. Make it like in this image:

Now go to Edit->Transform Path->Scale and make it less high.

Now go to Filter->Stylize->Emboss and use these settings:

Now comes the tricky part. Duplicate this layer and move it up just one pixel. Repeat this step about 6-8 times. Remember always to duplicate the most top layer. The result is this:

Now merge all the layers, except the top one. Press Ctrl+U and click on colorize. Play with the colors. I used these settings:

The result is this:

Now hold Ctrl and click on the top layer so you have the shape selected. Using the Gradient Tool apply a gradient to it. I used:

After that change the layer Blend Mode to Color.

The result is this:

Now ad a background to the image. I suggest a white back ground...actually I used #ededed.

The final touch is to ad a drop shadow. I used these settings:
