Realistic Speakers

Author: GreyCobra.com More by this author

1. Create a new document, (300x400).

2. Make a rectangle selection, and fill it with Grey in a new layer.  Center it in your document:

3. This is the outline of our speaker.  Using the Dodge tool, give it a bright side (I am using a 400px brush with 0% hardness.  I am just going to brush up and down, and slightly left and right on the left side of the speaker outline):

image 2

4. Now, lets shade the right side a bit.  Use the same brush as above:

image 3

5. Now that we have a quick base, lets create the bases for the other parts of the speaker.  Using the pen tool, make a point on your document right about here:

image 4

6. Make a second point here:

image 5

7. Now hold shift to create a vertical line, and click for a third point:

image 6

8. Hold shift and make another point, a little over the center line of the speaker:

9. Hold shift and make a point at the top:

10. Close your shape:

11. Using your Convert Point Tool, Make the bottom lines curve a bit:

12. Duplicate this shape layer, and flip it horizontally (Edit > Transform > Flip Horizontal).  Reposition it to be in line with the other:

image 11

13. Put both of these layers into a layer set, and then center them.  Then position them vertically so they look like this:

image 12

14. Now lets make two sides.  Make a similar shape to this on your speaker with your pen tool:

Duplicate and flip horizontal.

image 14

15. Go back to your large speaker, and rasterize them (right click > Rasterize layer).  Merge these two layers together.  Also rasterize the other two speaker layers, but do not merge them.

16. Using the eclipse selection tool, make a selection on your speaker here:

image 15

17. On your main base layer, using your dodge tool, make the area in this selection brighter:

image 16

18. Zoom in on the edge of this selection, and using a small doge brush, make the edges brighter:

19. Inverse the selection, and shade the other side a little with the burn tool:

image 19

20. Make the edges appear more rounded by dodging the outer edges of the base:

image 20

21. Using your burn tool, darken your large speaker until it is a dark grey:

image 21

22. Shade your large speaker some more until you have it looking like this:

image 22

23. Using the polygon selection tool, make a selection like this:

image 23

24. Use the elliptical selection tool to add on a circle at the bottom:

image 24

25. Inverse the selection, and dodge this area:

image 25

26. And now make a diagonal line using the dodge and burn tools:

27. Inverse the selection again, and shade the inside with your burn tool:

28. Begin to shade your side small speakers:

29. Continue to shade the right side of it with a smaller burn brush:

30. Repeat with the other side:

31.Duplicate your Left Speaker.  Scale it to look like this (Edit > Transform > Scale):

image 32

32.Ctrl + Click to make a selection around the new layer.  Hide this layer, and go to your base layer:

image 33

33. Use your burn tool to make this appear like an inset:

image 34

34. Repeat with the other side:

image 35

35. Add a drop shadow to the large speaker:

image 36

36. Create a new document (5x5), and using the pencil tool, create the following pattern:

image 37

37. Define this as a new pattern.  Go back to your speaker document.  On the main speaker, go into the blending options.  Add a pattern with the pattern you just made.  Set the opacity down until it looks like this:

image 38

38. Create another new document, and make this a pattern:

image 39

(3x3)

39. Apply this to the side speakers, and then dodge them so that they look like this:

40. Add some Text with a bevel and metallic gradient overlay to your speaker:

41. And add any final touches!
